Shortlist: Micro Fiction Writing Competition S2, Round 6

Empty Nest

It’s finally here, the shortlist for our 6th and last round of this series of micro fiction writing competitions. Apologies for how long the process has taken this time around. I moved my family over 1300 kms away and to say the process has been a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns is an understatement. We are still not in our rental home (one more week to go) after it was delayed a few weeks, and I’ve got my computer set up in our holiday rental accomodation so that I can finally get this post up and put an end to the misery of waiting for your all. Your patience has been amazing and I thank you all for sticking with me.

I’m still hoping to have the anthology published and available by Mothers day so fingers crossed there are no more big dramas or events for us over the next few months.

Now for the big news. The shortlist for round 6 of this series of the Mum Life Stories Micro Fiction Writing Competition.

Writers were asked to write a story of 500 words or less around the theme ‘Empty Nest’. They could interpret it any way they saw fit as long as it was in narrative form. I’m happy to say that 99% of submissions stuck to these guidelines and made reading for us judges, a pleasurable experience.

Micro Fiction Writing Competition S2 Round 6: Cash Prizes

This is it! The final round of this series of micro fiction writing competitions. The last round before production begins on the second Mum Life Stories Anthology, and your final chance to be a part of this beautiful book.

I’m sad to say that this will probably be the last series of competitions I will be able to run, at least for a while. My family and business commitments have meant that I cannot spend the time that I need to on getting the competitions advertised and judged etc in reasonable time frames. I don’t know if I will be able to run them again in the future but I’m hopeful that I will.

So let’s make this last round the best one yet. Please help spread the word on social media etc, and tell all your writer friends so that we can finish this anthology with a bang!

Round 6 is themed ‘Empty Nest’, probably the most bitter sweet time in a mothers life, when all the hard work sees it’s reward in an independent child going off to live their own life but at the same time leaving a child-sized hole in our hearts that will never truly be filled again. It’s a new season, filled with new experiences and choices about our own lives that we didn’t have the option for, for so many years, but now we are not sure if we want. Confusing, yet exciting at the same time.

I’m really looking forward to reading all the submissions in a months time.

Submission opens at 12AM this Sunday morning AEST, the 16th of October and closes 4 weeks later on Sunday the 6th of November at midnight AEST.

Adolescence

It’s finally here, the shortlist for our second last round of this series of micro fiction writing competitions. After opening this round for submissions twice, there was eventually a decent amount of entries for some healthy competition. I’m hoping that our next and final round will attract a bit more attention though so we can finish off the anthology with a bang!

Due to the amount of times I’ve had to extend submission dates and re-open rounds etc, I am unfortunately going to have to push back the release date of the anthology. I was hoping to have it out by the end of this year but it is looking more likely that February 2023 will be the soonest I can get it compiled and published. There is due to be some big changes for me and my family at the end of this year, so time for Mum Life Stories is going to be limited. Rest assured it ‘will’ happen though! It won’t be out in time for Christmas but it will be right on time for Mother’s Day!

After this, there is just one more round to go. So get those creative juices flowing and think about what mischievous tales you can tell about young adults or the return to freedom for empty nesters. Okay, you can talk about the down side too, but not too much, we want some uplifting tales too. Let’s end the anthology in a positive light.

Now for the big news. The shortlist for round 5 of this series of the Mum Life Stories Micro Fiction Writing Competition.

Writers were asked to write a story of 500 words or less around the theme ‘Adolescence’. They could interpret it any way they saw fit as long as it was in narrative form. I’m happy to say that 99% of submissions stuck to these guidelines and made reading for us judges, a pleasurable experience.

Micro Fiction Writing Competition S2 Round 5: Cash Prizes

Well, we’re almost there. I can see the second ‘Mum Life Stories’ anthology on the horizon and it’s setting up to be as good, if not better than the first. Only 2 rounds of competitions to go and then production begins. Only 2 rounds to go for your chance to be a part of this beautiful book and have your story immortalised in its pages for ever and ever.

Okay so they may run out of copies eventually and they may all disintegrate and decompose back into the earth just like us, but I’m sure their words will resonate in the hearts of our children and our children’s children, etc, for ever and ever. Not only that but you’ll have bragging rights at every high school/college reunion and family gathering for the rest of your life. Nothing sounds quite as impressing as “my story was published in a book” (insert cocky smile and a dozen ‘oooh’s and ‘ahhhh’s).

If that’s not enough motivation to whip up a 500 word masterpiece then think of the cash! It’s not enough to buy your own island and retire to write 100 trashy novels, but you could get a decent celebratory dinner or luxury pedicure, depending on your exchange rate of course.

Round 5 is themed ‘Adolescence’, probably the most exciting of all 6 rounds I think, as there’s bound to be a hundred and one stories from each writers on teenage journey, that they can draw inspiration from. They are the most termultuous years of our lives after all. I’m really looking forward to reading all the submissions in a months time.

Submission opens at 12AM this Sunday morning AEST, the 26th of June and closes 4 weeks later on Sunday the 24th of July at midnight AEST.

Middle Childhood

Apologies for another late shortlist announcement. I’m pretty sure I’ve crammed more into my life lately than I ever crammed into the nappy bag for my twins, but I eventually get all my ducks in a row and get to everything I need to, late or not. Hopefully you’ve all kept busy and haven’t been holding your breath too long for this short list, or we’ll have a lot less entrants in the next comp.

Dad jokes aside, the quality of entrants get’s better and better every round, so our job has been a lot harder. On the upside it means that we’re going to have an outstanding anthology to release at the end of it all. Just 2 more rounds after this one, with round 5 starting soon. So get those creative juices flowing and think about what mischievous tales you can tell about teens.

Now for the big news. The shortlist for round 4 of this series, of the Mum Life Stories Micro Fiction Writing Competition.

Writers were asked to write a story of 500 words or less around the theme ‘Middle Childhood’. They could interpret it any way they saw fit as long as it was in narrative form. I’m happy to say that 99% of submissions stuck to these guidelines and made reading for us judges, a pleasurable experience.
